Renowned astrophysicist Keivan Stassun joins Franklin as head of physics and astronomy

 Astrophysicist Keivan Stassun, a nationally recognized leader in the study of stars and exoplanets, is joining UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences as the inaugural holder of the Ashvin B. Chhabra Distinguished Professorship and new head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in January, bringing with him a decorated career of scientific discovery and expanding access and innovation in the sciences.

Anne Shaffer named interim dean of UGA Graduate School

Anne Shaffer, senior associate dean of the University of Georgia Graduate School and professor of psychology, has been appointed interim dean of the Graduate School, effective Aug. 1.

The University of Georgia School of Medicine has welcomed 64 students to its inaugural class. These 64 students come to the School of Medicine after more than 2,000 applications were submitted during a condensed two-week admissions cycle. School officials interviewed 235 prospective students before extending offers of admission.

The University of Georgia has been named one of the nation’s best colleges by Money in its annual Best Colleges in America ratings. UGA earned 4.5 out of 5 stars, with Money highlighting the university’s affordability, academic quality and strong student outcomes.

Walcott selected as interim senior vice president for academic affairs and provost

University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead announced Tuesday that Ron R. Walcott, vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School, has been named the interim senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, effective August 1.

Seven UGA faculty and administrators earn Fulbright awards for 2026-2027

Seven University of Georgia faculty members and administrators have received Fulbright awards that will take them to Armenia, Brazil, Bulgaria, India, and Israel in the 2026-2027 academic year. Their work spans biochemical engineering, poultry science, landscape architecture, religion, communication sciences and disorders and international education.

UGA tops AUTM rankings for 4th consecutive year

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Georgia ranked No. 1 among U.S. universities for the number of new commercial products brought to market by industry partners based on university research, according to the 2025 annual survey conducted by AUTM.

UGA leads nation with 18 Boren Scholars in 2026

A record-breaking 18 undergraduates at the University of Georgia were named Boren Scholars this spring, landing UGA at No. 1 among top-performing institutions for Boren Awards, which takes into account a university’s total number of Boren Scholars and Fellows.

UGA awards seed grants to support faculty partnerships in rural Georgia

The University of Georgia’s Rural Engagement Workshop for Academic Faculty has awarded $75,000 in seed grants supporting faculty-led projects focused on addressing critical challenges and opportunities in rural Georgia. The grants, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, will help faculty from across the university engage directly with rural communities.

Lemons named associate provost for faculty affairs

Paula Lemons, a distinguished University of Georgia faculty member and academic leader, has been named associate provost for faculty affairs. Her appointment was effective June 1. Lemons will lead the Office of Faculty Affairs and work closely with campus leaders on faculty‑related policies, processes and records.

UGA reaffirmed as APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity university

The University of Georgia has been reaffirmed as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, marking the institution’s second reaffirmation of the distinction. UGA alumnus Sudhan Chitgopkar named a Knight-Hennessy Scholar

Sudhan Chitgopkar, a University of Georgia alumnus from Cumming, will work to merge his knowledge of computer science with studies in law as a 2026 Knight-Hennessy Scholar, a fully endowed, multidisciplinary leadership development program for graduate students at Stanford University.

Commencement marks a moment of change for UGA Class of 2026

A total of 9,477 students met requirements to walk in the university’s spring Commencement ceremonies and had their degrees conferred by UGA President Jere W. Morehead. Of the graduate students, 274 were doctoral candidates, and 1,611 earned their master’s or specialist degrees.

Fifth annual Electric Mobility Summit draws industry leaders to Athens

National Academy of Sciences elects Hart, Schmitz to 2026 class

UGA student selected for prestigious FAO Schwarz Fellowship

University of Georgia senior and Atlanta native Eliza Fausset has been selected as a 2026-28 FAO Schwarz Fellow, earning a place in one of the nation’s most selective postgraduate fellowship programs focused on social impact and nonprofit leadership.

UGA School of Nursing to be named in honor of Victoria Kay Ivester

On April 17, Melvin Douglas “Doug” Ivester surprised his wife by revealing the University of Georgia School of Nursing will be named in her honor as the Victoria Kay Ivester School of Nursing. The naming recognizes gifts from Doug Ivester and the Ivester Foundation that will create a $20.5 million endowment to benefit the school.

UGA poet and scholar Ed Pavlić named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow

University of Georgia poet and scholar Ed Pavlić was named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow, a prestigious honor for professionals working across the arts, humanities and sciences. Pavlić is a Distinguished Research Professor of English and African American Studies in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

UGA senior selected as Gaither Junior Fellow

University of Georgia senior Justin Cohen will continue his studies in political science and international affairs in Washington, D.C., this fall as a James C. Gaither Junior Fellow. The highly competitive program, run through the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, offers one-year fellowships in D.C. to students seriously interested in pursuing careers in international affairs.

University of Georgia names director of academic and community engagement

The University of Georgia has named Bethany Bagwell director of the Office of Academic and Community Engagement. Bagwell began her appointment April 1. An experienced higher education leader, she will advance the office’s efforts to foster inclusive and welcoming learning environments for students, faculty, staff and university partners.

Two UGA undergraduates named 2026 Goldwater Scholars

UGA juniors Vaughn Frost and Annie Mehta are among the 454 undergraduates from across the nation to be recognized as Barry Goldwater Scholars this spring. The scholarship is the highest undergraduate award of its type for the fields of mathematics, engineering and natural sciences and provides funding for students studying within these fields.

C. Robin Buell named 2026 SEC Professor of the Year

C. Robin Buell, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Crop Genomics at the University of Georgia, has been named the 2026 Southeastern Conference Professor of the Year, the conference’s highest faculty honor. Buell becomes the fourth UGA faculty member to receive this award.

Victoria Hasko receives 2026 Richard Reiff Award

With a target to enroll about 6,250 students this fall, the University of Georgia’s Office of Admissions admitted more than 15,400 students to the Class of 2030. Santanu Chatterjee named dean of UGA’s Terry College of Business

Santanu Chatterjee, a widely respected scholar, teacher and leader in the University of Georgia’s C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business, has been named the college’s 13th dean. He previously served as associate dean for graduate programs and most recently as interim dean of Terry College.

UGA’s 2026 Humanities Festival begins March 16

The University of Georgia will present its fourth annual Humanities Festival from March 16 to April 2. The three-week festival will feature public lectures, conversations, readings and other events including an opening celebration honoring recent accomplishments by the humanities community at UGA.

Elizabeth Weeks named UGA’s vice provost for academic affairs

Elizabeth Weeks, who has served as the University of Georgia’s interim vice provost for academic affairs since June 2025, has been named to the position on a permanent basis. Her appointment is effective immediately.

UGA gains six more National Academy of Inventors Senior Members

The National Academy of Inventors has selected six University of Georgia researchers as 2026 NAI Senior Members, underscoring the university’s strong momentum in innovation and commercialization. With these latest elections, UGA now has 30 Senior Members overall.

The University of Georgia’s online degree programs once again ranked highly, with several of its programs placing in the top 10 nationally according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Online Programs rankings released Jan. 27. Overall, UGA ranked No. 18, maintaining its position in the top 20 nationally.

UGA President Emeritus Michael F. Adams leaves impressive legacy

Michael F. Adams, University of Georgia president emeritus, died on Jan. 25, 2026, following a brief illness. He was 77 years old. Adams, who served as the university’s 21st president from 1997 to 2013, led the university to national prominence as one of the country’s top 20 public research universities.

Ruter, Yan named National Academy of Inventors Fellows

University of Georgia professors John Ruter and Yajun Yan have been elected Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, bringing UGA’s total to 19 faculty members who have received this honor since 2012. It is the seventh consecutive year the university has had faculty elected.

UGA sets another record with $654M in R&D expenditures in FY25

For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Georgia set a research and development record with $654 million in related expenditures during fiscal year 2025, representing a 4.1% increase over the previous year. Since 2015, UGA’s R&D activity has grown by 75%.
