New Department Head Training

New Department Head Training is now the New Leader Program. More information about this program will be published on our website in July 2022.

The Office of Faculty Affairs invites campus leaders to register for the fall 2021 New Department Head Training ProgramThe program will introduce administrators at UGA to a variety of important policies and will provide them with opportunities to strengthen their management and leadership skills through the use of interactive discussions and activities.

Participation is expected for department heads, school chairs, assistant deans and associate deans who were appointed after September 1, 2020. Other campus leaders are encouraged to attend as much of the program as their schedule allows.

Registration Required: If you would like to attend a session, please contact the Office of Faculty Affairs, Program Coordinator, Harper.Davison@uga.edu.

We will be following USG and UGA guidelines and encouraging mask use for indoor spaces.

**If you participate in this program, we will provide you with C.K. Gunsalus's The College Administrator's Survival Guide. We will bring your copy to the first session. We will send the pre-session reading for the first session as a PDF to your UGA email.

Faculty Hiring
A variety of resources for hiring faculty, including the list of faculty ranks and employment status categories and the search and hire checklist, are posted on OFA’s Faculty Hiring and Appointments page.  The template offer letters for full-time and part-time faculty are posted on the Faculty Offer Letter Templates page. Tips on negotiating offer letters and other matters can be found in on this handout.

Links to the detailed appointment and promotion guidelines for each faculty career track can be found on the Promotion and Tenure page; these documents provide information on the roles of each faculty career track and define the appointment requirements for each individual rank.

When you are ready to launch a search, before the job description is written, please:

  1. Contact Carly Surratt to request a copy of the faculty posting spreadsheet (this document will help ensure policy requirements are met and thus expedite approval of the posting in UGAJobs), and
  2.  Encourage the search committee to participate in the Search Committee Training offered by Faculty Affairs (training schedule is listed on the P&T Workshops page).
