A graduate or terminal degree is required per policy for a faculty appointment at the University of Georgia (UGA) depending on the appointment rank (see rank requirements in UGA Policy 03.04.002 Faculty Definitions Policy).

A terminal degree is the highest level of education within a particular field. In some cases, a master’s degree qualifies as a terminal degree in a particular field or discipline. The following is the current list of approved non-doctoral terminal degrees at UGA:

  • MLIS – Master of Library and Information Science
  • MARCH – Master of Architecture
  • MFA – Master of Fine Arts
  • MHP – Master of Historic Preservation
  • MLA – Master of Landscape Architecture
  • MSW – Master of Social Work
  • MRP – Master of Regional Planning
  • MVA – Master of Visual Art
  • MS – Master of Science in Child Life
  • MUD – Master of Urban Design

Note: If the selected candidate does not hold a graduate or terminal degree as required by policy for the advertised faculty rank, a written degree exception request must be submitted to the Office of Faculty Affairs, prior to extending the offer letter (see Degree Exception Request in UGA Policy 03.01.011 Appointment Procedures).
