Working Group on Faculty Evaluation Policies and Practices
A 25-member Working Group on Faculty Evaluation Policies and Practices has been charged with helping develop revisions to the University’s policies and practices on faculty promotion and tenure, annual evaluation, and post-tenure review. The Working Group was appointed in response to revisions to University System of Georgia policies on annual and post-tenure reviews that were approved by the Board of Regents on October 13, 2021.
As stated in the introduction to the University’s current Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure of Academic Rank Faculty, drafted by a faculty task force and approved by University Council in 2004, the University of Georgia is the oldest publicly chartered institution in the nation and is the land-grant, sea-grant university in the state of Georgia. It has broad responsibilities in promoting the advancement of knowledge in service to the people of Georgia, the nation, and the world. For over two hundred years, University faculty have discharged their responsibilities of teaching, research, and service in a distinguished manner, consistent with the mission of the University. The faculty are primarily responsible for attracting the very best students to the institution and ensuring their success. For all these reasons, appointing, developing, and retaining an outstanding faculty is critical to the success of the University.
The processes for appointment, promotion and tenure, annual evaluation, and post-tenure reviews must be fair, rigorous, and discipline appropriate. The University already has established guidelines for appointment, promotion and tenure, as well as policies for annual evaluations and post-tenure reviews. These guidelines and policies will need to be updated to be consistent with the new USG policies. The Working Group will help develop institutional policy revisions for consideration by the Faculty Affairs Committee and, ultimately, University Council.
The Working Group is co-chaired by Janette Hill, Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee of University Council and Professor in the Department of Career and Information Studies in the Mary Frances Early College of Education, and Elizabeth Weeks, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Charles H. Kirbo Chair in the School of Law. Its members were appointed in consultation with Hill, Weeks, and Barbara Biesecker, Chair of the Executive Committee of University Council.
