  • The co-chairs reminded the working group of the work so far and reviewed the current working definition of student success activities. Updates and additions were made to the document.

  • The working group discussed more revisions to the PTR policy revisions. 
  • The working group reviewed flow charts of the PTR and PTRAC process flow.

13 December 2021

  • The working group discussed scheduling listening sessions in the Spring 2022 semester.
  • The working group reviewed the timeline of the working group in relation to UC meetings (e.g., FAC, Executive Committee, University Council) to ensure timely review and completion of the work.
  • The working group spent the majority of the time continuing to review and edit for the draft of the PTR policy revisions.

  • The working group spent the majority of the time making updates and revisions to the draft PTR policy revisions document.

  • The working group reviewed, discussed, and approved a draft definition of “student success activities,” while continuing to seek input from across the institution on examples of student success activities.
  • The working group discussed the incorporation of due process in the faculty review processes and the AAUP key principles of due process. The committee reviewed a working document on due process.
  • The working group discussed the annual evaluation policy and challenges presented by existing differences across disciplines in allocation of effort.

22 November 2021

  • The working group continued discussions of the revised BOR policies focusing on student success activities and annual evaluation.
  • The working group voted to allow inclusion of student success activities across three existing areas of effort – teaching, research, and service – rather than just as part of teaching effort.
  • The working group is requesting input on improving the faculty evaluation process.

 15 November 2021

  • Given the importance, the working group set times to meet every Monday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 from Nov 15th 2021 to May 16th the Dec. 27 and January 3 meetings are cancelled due to holidays.
  • The working group is requesting input on improving the faculty evaluation process.
  • On-going communication strategies were discussed so that the UGA community can stay updated with the work of the working group. It was decided that the co-chairs will post meeting summaries to the website after each meeting.
    • In addition, working group co-chair and Faculty Affairs Committee Chair, Janette Hill, will share weekly updates with FAC members, and working group member and Executive Committee Chair, Barbara Biesecker, will share weekly updates with EC members.
  • The working group discussed differences between UGA’s current policies and the revised BOR policies. Discipline- and unit-specific variations in expectations and roles of faculty were also discussed. It was clarified that student success activities are not a standalone pillar of evaluation but can be placed within one or more existing pillars of evaluation.

5 November 2021

  • Provost Hu appointed a 14 member Working Group on Faculty Evaluation Policies and Practices (FEPP) in response to the BOR policy revisions regarding faculty annual evaluations, promotion and tenure, and post-tenure review.
    • The working group includes representatives from UC Executive Committee, Faculty Affairs Committee, Committee on Statutes, Bylaws, and Committees, and Post-tenure Review Appeals Committee, as well as other faculty and unit leadership representatives across disciplines

  • The committee consists of co-chairs Janette Hill (Professor College of Education, current UGA Faculty Affairs Committee chair) and Elizabeth Weeks (Professor School of Law, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs).   • The Annual Review and Post Tenure Review process changes as outlined by the BOR will be utilized to assist the FEPP in modifying current UGA promotion and tenure policies, guidelines, and criteria (https://provost.uga.edu/policies/appointment-promotion-and-tenure/). Any changes, updates, other relevant information will be reviewed and approved by multiple levels of faculty governance including the Faculty Affairs Committee, University Executive Committee, and University Council.
    • Current deadline is for institutional policy development to be completed by end of 2021-2022 academic year.
    • Institutional-level policy changes related to the BOR policy changes are subject to final approval by the BOR.
