Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Announcement

Alan T. Dorsey, who has led the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences since 2012, recently announced that he will step down as Dean and return to the faculty on June 30, 2022.

Under Dean Dorsey’s leadership, the Franklin College launched several new degree programs in fields such as data science, ocean science, cybersecurity, and—in conjunction with the Grady College—film, television, and digital media. Credit hour production increased to a record level, as did sponsored research funding and alumni engagement.

As part of UGA’s Commit to Georgia comprehensive fundraising campaign, donors contributed $109 million to the Franklin College and helped create 20 new endowed professorships. The number of individual donors to the college has more than doubled since 2012.

Dr. Dorsey has championed several initiatives to advance diversity and inclusion through the Franklin College Office of Diversity Leadership. He also has been instrumental in the launch of campus-wide initiatives such as the experiential learning requirement.

An announcement on the search for the next Dean of the Franklin College will be forthcoming. In the meantime, please join in me in thanking Dr. Dorsey for his outstanding service to the University and wishing him continued success in his final year as Dean.
