The University of Georgia has once again earned the top spot in the nation’s longest-running and most comprehensive ranking of colleges and universities that exhibit outstanding commitment to student veterans.

Among America’s tier-one research universities, UGA ranked first in Victory Media’s 2018-19 Military Friendly Schools list. The rankings were determined by combining survey data with variables such as retention, graduation and job placement rates. This year marks the second time that UGA has earned a No. 1 Military Friendly ranking from Victory Media, and other top-10 schools this year include North Carolina State University and the University of Florida.

Veterans commonly come to the University with transfer credits, are typically older than other students and are also more likely to have spouses and children. To position them for success during their time on campus and well beyond graduation, UGA’s Student Veterans Resource Center provides a convenient and centralized point of access to an array of tailored services and programs. Just across the hall, the First Data Student Veterans Lounge in the Tate Student Center offers a comfortable and dedicated space for student veterans to gather.

Through the SVRC, students progress through structured and consistent coaching that begins with a veteran’s orientation and the assignment of an academic coach. Readiness coaches work with students to build a personalized development plan that highlights their career or graduate school interests and then progresses to support in navigating the job search process.

The SVRC is staffed by veterans and is directed by Ted Barco, a former U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. It is part of the University’s broader Division of Student Affairs, and it works closely with units across campus such as the University Health Center, Office of Financial Aid and Career Center.

Students come to the University of Georgia from a range of backgrounds and with a variety of life experiences. Our top national ranking for service to student veterans underscores the unwavering commitment of the University’s faculty, staff and administration to giving students an unrivaled level support and an education that prepares them for a lifetime of success.
