Greetings from Provost Hu

Provost S. Jack Hu speaking to a group of students at the University of Georgia.

The University of Georgia has a storied history as the birthplace of public higher education in America, but what excites me about serving as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost is this institution’s boundless potential for the future.

We have the privilege of shaping the lives of young people through the instruction we provide in our classrooms, studios, and laboratories. Through experiential learning, our students apply and build upon this knowledge while enriching their educational experience, as well as their opportunities for the future. Our graduate and professional degree programs combine depth of learning and, in many cases, interdisciplinary breadth to keep our state and nation at the leading edge of discovery and innovation. Nurturing the intellectual, professional, and personal growth of our students while advancing our commitment to diversity and inclusion are key priorities.

Great universities share knowledge, but they also expand knowledge and seek solutions through research and scholarship. Our university is a national leader in technology commercialization, with an entrepreneurial spirit that has fueled dramatic growth in research activity over the past several years. Accelerating this momentum is an urgent priority, as each discovery brings with it the promise of healthier people, a more secure future, a deeper appreciation of history, cultures and the arts, and stronger communities.

One of the many factors that distinguishes this institution is its land-grant mission of service. Whether supporting the state’s agricultural industry through Cooperative Extension, developing leaders, or helping revitalize downtowns to spur economic development, the University of Georgia is committed to the people and communities of our state. Our regional and international collaborations emphasize that Georgia is a global crossroads for culture and industry, and we seek to expand our partnerships across the state and beyond.

As someone who has devoted his career to public higher education, I am deeply honored to serve as both a faculty member and as Provost at the University of Georgia. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office if my team or I can be of assistance to you. I welcome your ideas for building upon the University of Georgia’s successes in teaching, research, and service.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
