Welcome from the Interim Provost

Libby MorrisIn each of our critical and interconnected missions—teaching, research and service—the University of Georgia is achieving new heights of excellence.

This institution is the birthplace of public higher education in America and committed to student success. We are ranked 16th among national public universities by U.S. News and World Report and proud to be the nation’s largest university to ensure that all of our undergraduates engage in hands-on learning such as internships, research, study abroad and service-learning. UGA also is a national leader in making graduate education more accessible and affordable through our Double Dawgs program, which gives students nearly 150 opportunities to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in five years or fewer.

At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, our students are taught and mentored by faculty who are at the forefront of innovation and creativity. Externally funded research activity has risen by nearly 40 percent since 2014 and is now at an all-time high. The 160 start-up companies and nearly 700 products, including vaccines, crop varieties and software, that stem from UGA discoveries demonstrate the far-reaching impact of faculty research and scholarship.

America’s public universities are engines of economic opportunity—not only for students but also for the communities and states they serve. Our Extension and Public Service and Outreach programs reach each of Georgia’s 159 counties and provide support and expertise to farmers, small business owners, families and communities. In total, the annual economic impact of the University’s teaching, research and service activities on the state of Georgia is $5.7 billion annually.

In my role as interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, I partner with President Jere W. Morehead and units across campus to build on this institution’s incredible momentum. I welcome your ideas for advancing our beloved University and hope that you won’t hesitate to reach out to my office if my staff or I can be of assistance to you.

Sincerely,

Libby V. Morris

Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
