Below are resources available to support UGA faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students who have been invited to present their research or scholarship at an academic conference or workshop.
Faculty Travel Funding
Domestic Travel
All requests for domestic travel funds should be directed to the dean in your school or college.
International Travel
The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the allocation of new funds to support international faculty travel in FY 2024. Effective immediately, these international travel funds will be managed by the Office of Global Engagement.
International travel is defined as travel outside the 48 contiguous states. These funds are intended for full-time faculty who are invited and/or accepted to attend an international conference or venue to present a scholarly paper or creative work.
International travel funding support is limited to one trip per faculty member in FY 2024. Requests must include at least 1:1 matching funds for consideration. A maximum of $2,000 in funding per faculty trip is available. Travel must take place between July 1, 2023, and June 25, 2024.
NEW: Beginning in FY 2024, faculty will have the opportunity to apply for additional funds supporting a connected visit to a new or existing international partner for the purpose of developing joint research, recruiting graduate students, or facilitating new institutional collaboration. Relevant documentation clearly identifying the activity to be undertaken will be required, including an invitation letter from the partner. Up to an additional $500 will be available, and no matching funds are required. The funds can be applied to lodging, transportation, and meal expenses of the traveler.
To apply for Provost International Travel Funds:
- Complete the Request for FY 2024 Provost International Travel Funds form available at this link. Please note, these funds must be used in conjunction with other funding to support the international travel request. When describing the nature of the travel, be precise in explaining your role at the conference or venue (i.e., presenting scholarly papers or creative works). Documentation supporting your request (e.g., invitation and/or acceptance letter) must be attached to the request.
- Faculty requesting additional funding for partnership development must attach an invitation letter from the partner on institutional letterhead that clearly identifies the proposed activity for which supplemental support is being sought and contains supporting information (invitation to give a lecture, workshop or seminar, official schedule of meetings, or formal evidence of joint research).
- Faculty must submit the request for funds to the appropriate department head / director and then to the dean/vice president for review and approval.
- The signed form with all supporting documentation should be submitted via email to [email protected].
Notification of Award: All requests will receive a notification and, if approved, the award will be transferred by the OGE Business Office. Any questions regarding Provost International Travel funds should be directed to the OGE Business Office ([email protected] or (706) 542-2900).
Postdoctoral Scholar Travel Funding
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in the Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to offer the Postdoctoral Scholar Travel Program. This program provides support for domestic and foreign travel for two purposes: 1) to present active research at national and international conferences as an oral presentation and 2) participation in professional development events, such as formal workshops or training sessions. An applicant must be officially seated in a Postdoctoral Associate AD, Postdoctoral Associate AC or Postdoctoral Fellow position to be eligible for the program.
Please see full guidelines and contact information on the Office of Research Postdoctoral Affairs website.
Domestic and International Graduate Student Travel Funding
The Graduate School is pleased to offer funding to students presenting their research/scholarly work at both domestic and international conferences and professional meetings. For the purposes of these awards, travel to Hawaii, Alaska, and U.S. territories outside of the contiguous 48 states is considered foreign travel.
Funds are awarded on a rolling basis, and a limited amount of funding is available each semester. The amount of each award will be based on factors such as prevailing costs at the meeting site, distance traveled, whether the meeting is regional, national, or international, and the availability of funds. Departmental matching funding in support of the student’s travel will greatly enhance the student’s chances for Graduate School funding.
Students may receive only one travel grant per fiscal year, regardless of the type of travel (domestic or international).
Please visit the Graduate School website for detailed information on eligibility and the application process. Review this information carefully, as international and domestic travel awards have different eligibility criteria.
All requests for travel funding must be submitted by the Graduate Coordinator in GradStatus. Students may not submit requests directly.
