As Associate Provost for Global Engagement, Dr. Martin Kagel oversees study abroad programs, the University’s international centers, immigration services, and international partnerships.
Kagel, the A.G. Steer Professor in Goethe Studies, served as Associate Dean for Humanities and International Studies in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences from 2016 to 2021. In this role, he oversaw international educational programs originating in the Franklin College and was the primary liaison in the dean’s office to nine departments and three interdisciplinary institutes. He served as head of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies for a decade, from 2006 to 2016. His efforts in development during that period led to the establishment of a Max Kade Foundation distinguished visiting professorship and several grant programs supporting undergraduate and graduate study abroad.
Other global engagement includes co-developing student and faculty exchange programs between UGA and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, a minor in transnational European studies, and a dual-degree program in German and engineering that includes a year of study abroad. He has also co-directed two annual faculty seminars in Berlin. In addition, Dr. Kagel was a visiting professor at Rostock University in Germany.
He is the author, editor, or co-editor of six books as well as three book-length special journal issues and has published over 60 journal articles, book chapters, and other scholarly works. His teaching honors include receiving the Sandy Beaver Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
Kagel earned a Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds a master’s degree in German and theatre studies from the Free University of Berlin.
