Welcome, Incoming Students

Several enhancements to summer orientation are helping students successfully transition to campus life.

This summer the University is welcoming the first groups of students who will be participating in our newly enhanced orientation sessions.

Based on feedback from students, parents, families, campus partners and external review teams, the University is rolling out several changes to streamline orientation and allow for more of the one-on-one academic advising that plays such an important role in student success.

The most notable change to New Student Orientation is a new format that gives students and their families more flexibility to choose the sessions that are right for them. In addition, a new “Welcome to UGA” app provides direct access to academic and campus resources, orientation session schedules and other helpful information.

Other changes to orientation include a new program specifically for parents and family members that provides practical advice on helping students transition to college life and highlights the many on-campus resources that are available to students. Parents can stay better connected to campus through a new, monthly newsletter that includes reminders about campus resources and information on new academic initiatives and programs.

To accommodate increased attendance among students and their families, the University has added new orientation leaders to bring the total number from 12 to 15. The outstanding students who serve as orientation leaders will each guide 24 summer orientation sessions through early August. Orientation sessions specifically tailored to transfer students are scheduled for June and July, as well.

A hallmark of a UGA education is linking academic knowledge with broader societal impacts through research and service. To instill in students the importance of giving back, this year New Student Orientation is partnering with local organization Books for Keeps to collect books for local students in grades Pre-K through 12.

The four years that our incoming first-year students will spend at the University of Georgia are perhaps the most formative of their lives. Thanks to our extraordinary orientation leaders, faculty, staff and administrators, New Summer Orientation lays a strong foundation academic success.
