Financial Management and Fundraising for Academic Leaders

Navigating Times of Conflict and Challenge

Facilitator: Leslie Rogers, Director of Learning and Development, University Human Resources

This workshop is part of the Faculty Leader Series and is geared to faculty who practice leadership in titled roles or provide leadership as part of their faculty role. Of all the variables that impact workplace performance, conflict between coworkers is often the most challenging one. Conflict can damage relationships, reduce performance and create fear, which explains why many people avoid it. Conflict also provides an excellent opportunity for increased understanding, greater clarity and better results when there is a willingness and ability to navigate it effectively. In this program from the Effectiveness Institute, creator of the People Skills program used throughout UGA, participants acquire the tools and skills necessary to navigate conflict in a way that leverages the opportunities conflict creates while minimizing the potential negative relational and workplace performance outcomes. The program includes real workplace scenarios so participants learn to immediately apply this knowledge.

Developing Your Supervision, Leadership, and Management Skills

This session is designed to provide faculty with a cursory introduction to a snapshot of leadership theories to employ when leading a team and provide the framework for developing one’s skills for managing the day-to-day operations of a team. It will provide participants with an introduction to facilitating effective team check-ins, encouraging collaboration and teamwork, running effective meetings, expanding their time management and delegation skills, and measuring effectiveness at their work. Participants can expect to leave this session with reflections on how they lead, supervise, and manage others and develop an outline of a plan they can use to implement new ideas when they return back to their area or unit.

Student Learning Outcomes Assessment and Program Review

Facilitators: Katie Burr, Director of Assessment, and Maggie Parker, Director for Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness

This session will provide insights into student learning outcomes (SLO) assessment and program review. By attending this session, participants will be able to 1. Explain the rationale behind the Program Review and SLO Assessment processes and identify the key components that need to be addressed, 2. Explain how data from the SLO Assessment informs the Program Review process, and vice versa, and 3. Describe key aspects of strong assessment design, such as choosing appropriate assessment methods and measures, analyzing data, and using assessment to inform instructional and curricular improvement. This session is open to all faculty and geared toward program coordinators, department heads, associate deans, and deans.

People Skills: Creating Breakthrough Communication & Collaboration Across Individuals, Teams, and Organizations

People Skills is the foundational development program created by the Effectiveness Institute. Through this program individuals develop an increased awareness of the impact that their behavior has on others, enabling them to strengthen relationships, improve communications, and build trust and respect with others to create a culture where productivity is at its highest.  Course participants complete an online assessment to determine their specific behavior style and use that assessment to develop strategies for improving collaboration with others.

This session draws from training offered via the workshop “My Voice, My Story” developed by Cornell University Graduate School. The primary objectives of “My Voice, My Story” are to utilize the power of narrative to achieve greater understanding of the lived experiences of mentees, shared stories that frequently go untold, and develop strategies on how to create more inclusive and supportive research and learning environments. This session is a partnership of the Graduate School, Graduate Mentoring Academy, and the Office of Faculty Affairs.

Leadership Community of Practice

Monthly Meetings 2021-2022, via Zoom

Join a community of academic leaders at UGA who are currently in titled roles. We’ll discuss five practices of exemplary leadership: 1/ Model the Way, 2/ Inspire a Shared Vision, 3/ Challenge the Process, 4/ Enabling Others to Act, and 5/ Encourage the Heart. This Leadership Challenge Model was developed by James M. Kouzes and Barry Posner, two acclaimed leadership researchers. Their book The Leadership Challenge (1987) is in its fifth edition and remains highly influential. In 2019, they authored Leadership in Higher Education: Practices that Make a Difference, which will form the basis of our conversations.

What do these practices mean in the context of UGA and your unit’s milieu and needs? Participants will join in mutual mentoring conversations wherein each will offer wisdom and gain enrichment. We will limit the group to a dozen and provide a copy of Leadership in Higher Education: Practices that Make a Difference.
